Green Grah

A green home is where all of this starts. Families, hostels and campus blocks adopt a sapling of their own, set up a compost bin for what the kitchen throws away, and take responsibility for one patch of soil through the year. Volunteers come back through the seasons to check on the plants, help fix what is not working and pass on what has worked elsewhere.

Households get a simple starter kit and a short walkthrough: which sapling suits their light and water, how to keep a compost bin from smelling, and what to do in the first hot month when most young plants are lost. Schools run the same thing at classroom level, which is usually where a family first hears about it.

The point was never a single planting day. It is a habit that survives long after the drive ends, one that a household keeps up even when nobody is watching.

Raddi Recycling

Old newspapers, answer sheets, exam paper, cartons and office files are collected from homes, classrooms and workplaces on a fixed schedule. Everything is weighed, sorted by grade and sent on to a recycler, and the value it earns goes straight back into the programme. A large share of that paper returns as fresh notebooks, handed to students who would otherwise be buying them out of an already tight household budget. Two problems get solved by the same act: paper headed for a landfill, and children who need something to write in.

Ek Muthi Daan

One fistful of grain set aside from every kitchen, every day, collected a handful at a time. It costs a household almost nothing and asks for no money at all, which is why so many families keep at it. Over a few weeks those handfuls add up to full ration kits for homes working through an illness, a lost job or simply a bad month.

Eco Wall

Discarded bottles, tyres, drums and plastic packaging are cleaned, cut and rebuilt into a standing green wall planted with creepers and small shrubs. Material that was headed for a landfill ends up holding soil, cooling a hot surface and cleaning the air immediately around it. Each wall is built alongside the students and residents of that place, so they know exactly what went into it and how to keep it alive. It is the clearest teaching tool in the programme, because it shows what waste is still worth without anyone having to explain it.
